Kenneth Eugene Varnum

Obituary

Kenneth Eugene Varnum was born August 1st, 1932 in Dothan, Alabama. He was 76 years old and had lived in Lehigh Acres since July of 1973. He is remembered by many in the neighborhood as Kenny, the mailman, as he delivered to his own residential route for 18.5 years.

Ken graduated high school in Colquitt, Georgia at the age of 16. He joined the Air Force to see the world, and that he did. He lived in England, Germany and Turkey. As a member of the elite Air Force Security Service, he did translations of Russian documents, books, letters etc. for over twenty years. He retired to Florida after 22.5 years in the Air Force. At first, he worked at Climate Control Air Conditioning, for several years, but for a 6'2" man squishing into those attics got old. He joined the US Postal Service in 1975 as a postal carrier.

He received many awards during his service, in both the Air Force and the USPS, among these are the Good Conduct Medal, Good Neighbor, Leadership, and Teaching awards. Always a good bowler; he was a member of the SW Florida Regional Bowling Association for 27 years, twice President of the local board and was also the Florida State President.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois Varnum; brothers Buford, Blonney and Leonard and his sister Christine Miller. He is survived by his brothers Hubert Varnum of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Carroll Varnum of Edison, Georgia and many nieces and nephews. His wife of 54 years, Joyce Rook Varnum, daughter Michele (Jim) Keane of Apopka, Florida and daughter Denise (John) Donholt, granddaughter Chelsey and grandson Jordan of Lehigh Acres, Florida.
